Salt Lake County Youth Services is hosting the 3rd Annual Lights On Afterschool Celebration as part of a nationwide effort to encourage community support and involvement in Afterschool Programs. Events will be held at Matheson Junior High on Oct. 19 and at Kearns Junior High on Oct 26.
In Utah today, 1 in 4 youth — 117,000 children — are alone and unsupervised after school, according to studies through the Afterschool Alliance, which hosts the nationwide celebration. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning.
Youth Services invites parents, teens, teachers, school administrators and community individuals and leaders to come to the Lights On Afterschool Celebration to find out how to get involved in Afterschool programs through volunteer work, donations and partnerships.
“Afterschool programs provide a safe place for teens to go when they would normally be going to an empty home, or worse, be put in vulnerable, dangerous situations,” said Youth Services Afterschool Program Manager Kelly Riding. “By providing these teens with positive adult mentors, we are helping students excel in the classroom and learn important life skills that they will remember far beyond the short time they spend with us.”
A Lights On Celebration will be held in Magna at the Matheson Junior High on October 19 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm and will include Brockbank Junior High, which just expanded to a 5-day a week program thanks to a Safe Passages grant. Salt Lake County Deputy Mayor Nichole Dunn will be the keynote speaker, followed by live performances from the youth.
The event at Kearns Junior High will also be combined with Kennedy Junior High on October 26 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon will be the keynote speaker and students will showcase talents and projects they have worked on throughout the past semester.
