Each summer, Youth Services Afterschool Program provides Summer Blast Programs to provide a safe and engaging environment for youth through hands on learning experiences.  As part of their College and Career Readiness component, staff invite different community members to share their career with the youth.

On June 18th, Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams visited with 60 students at Brockbank Jr. High in Magna, as part of their guest speaker series.  Mayor McAdams shared stories of his past, how he got to where he is today, what his job as Mayor entails and encouraged the youth to follow their dreams and reach their goals.

IMG_6566The population in Magna has over 9,000 youth with 15.4% living in poverty.  In 2014, Cyprus High School had a 74% graduation rate compared to the state graduation rate of 83%. The 2015 graduation rate has increased in one year to 80%. Youth Services is working alongside Granite School District to help students in the Magna area to ensure there is a culture of College and Career Readiness to continue increasing student’s post-secondary achievements and be prepared for the 21st Century.

Having community leaders, like Mayor McAdams, taking time to speak to the youth is an essential piece of impacting the next generation in the work force. If you’d like more information about Youth Services Afterschool Program you can call 385-468-4438 or visit www.youth.slco.org.
