Celebrate Lights On Afterschool

LOA-small-aBy Sally Hannon, Youth Services Afterschool Program Coordinator

October finds our Afterschool staff busily preparing for their Lights On Afterschool events. Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year.

DSC03278 The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.

IMG_0053This year, Youth Services staff will host Lights On Events on Wednesday, October 21st, at Kearns Junior High, and Thursday, October 22nd, at Matheson Junior High. Afterschool students and their families will enjoy performances from each program held in Magna, Kearns, and West Valley City. The performances are a great way for each site to showcase the creativity and innovative ideas that are a result of participating in the program consistently.

Many of our partners, such as the Salt Lake County Library, will have booths stationed at each event allowing even more access to the services that are offered for the families we serve. Leaders from throughout Salt Lake County will also be joining us offering their support for the student’s hard work. A light dinner will be served and attendees will have a chance to interact with community leaders, teachers, and yes…enjoy light bulb cookies!
