March into May with Healthy Lifestyles

appleAuthored by Maria Drummond, CTRS, Youth Services Recreation Therapist

As spring is sneaking its way past winter onto center stage, many of us are rekindling our relationships with the Great Outdoors. During this time of increased outdoor activity, we’d like to highlight Salt Lake County’s Healthy Lifestyles program. Healthy Lifestyles is an incentive based work-site wellness program that promotes healthy behaviors and healthy lifestyles to promote a healthier work environment and lower healthcare costs. If you are eligible for benefits (regardless if you use them or not) and an active Salt Lake County employee, you can participate in Healthy Lifestyles along with your spouse or adult designee.

Healthy Lifestyles offers a variety of health programs, classes, and events throughout the year to increase awareness, education, and provide encouragement to employees working towards healthier lives.womanworkout

One of our most popular programs, March into May, will be taking off in just a couple of weeks. Employees are forming teams across the county, and will wear a pedometer for a 2 week walking contest, which focuses on encouraging Salt Lake County employees to invite the simple health promoting practice of regular walking back into our lives after the cold winter months. According to a Mayo Clinic article, “regular brisk walking can help you:

– Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
– Strengthen your bones
– Lift your mood
– Improve your balance and coordination

The faster, farther and more frequently you walk, the greater the benefits.”
For tips on getting started with a regular walking routine, see the full Mayo Clinic article here.

Building regular exercise into our lives, even something as simple as a daily walk, can lead to greater quality of life in general. Create a family routine of regular exercise, or gather a friend or two to hit the road (or one of many beautiful trails available in Salt Lake County) and find out for yourself what benefits lay in store for you!Maintain-a-Healthy-Lifestyle-Build-Relationships
